Volvo 850 T5

Volvo 850 T5

Volvo was one of the first to create the idea of a high performance station wagon. In 1994 it introduced a 2.5 litre turbo engine as a way of producing a halo model that would lift the rather boring image Volvo had been saddled with, so it slotted this 223 horsepower engine into its 850 model, giving a 0-60 time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph.

At the same time introduced a range of bright colour schemes for it such as the banana yellow seen here and bright red, along with an aggressive (for the time) body kit and big alloy wheels. It even entered the car into the British touring car championship in a joint venture with Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR), which really helped raise awareness and brand image.

Another Mad Japanese turbo special, the Subaru Impreza was offered for several years in a wagon variant alongside the traditional sedan. The car had the standard 2.0 turbo boxer flat-four cylinder engine developing a restricted 276 horsepower, but could easily be boosted to more. It also had all the clever electronics that the sedan had, with active 4 wheel drive, and a 0-60 time of under 5 seconds, along with fantastic wet weather performance.

Mitsubishi Evo Wagon

Mitsubishi Evo Wagon

Mitsubishi dont usually get too involved in large capacity high performance cars, but decided in 2006 to go a little crazy and offer their fantastic Lancer Evo IX in the form of a station wagon.

It was a full blown Evo model in every detail – Same turbocharged engine developing supposedly 276 horsepower from a 2.0 turbo engine, but realistically it is reported to be putting out more like 315 horsepower, and giving a 0-60 time of just 4.8 seconds.

It also carried over Mitsubishi’s clever active centre differential, and the massively powerful Brembo brakes. The manufacturer only offered 2500 of these beauties for sale, and decided not to produce a Wagon version of its successor, the Evo X.

Vauxhall VXR8 Estate

Vauxhall VXR8 Estate

This is a concept car from General Motors shown for the UK market, based on what is called in the UK the Vauxhall VXR8, itself a version of the Pontiac G8, which is a rebadged Holden HSV Clubsport R8, designed and built in Australia.

It utilises the 6.2 litre V8 LS3 engine from GM’s line-up, and in this guise features 425 horsepower, giving a 0-60 time of under 5 seconds and rear wheel drive, all for half the price of the equivalent BMW M5.

The car was officially being shown in concept guise in 2008, despite being production ready, and no word has been given if Vauxhall will ever release the car for the UK market.

Maserati Quattroporte Bellagio

Another creation from Italian coachbuilder Superleggera Touring based in Milan is this take on a Maserati Quattroporte, conversion into a Fastback Station Wagon, called the Bellagio. Whilst the car does not appear to have that much room in the trunk, the rear seats can be folded, giving a load space of 1.8 metres long, and can be based on any of the current Quattroporte specifications meaning the 4.7 litre V8 engine can be had, giving a 0-60 time of under 5 seconds, along with some serious one-off Italian style.

Bentley Continental Wagon Sketch 1

Here’s a sketch for a Bentley Continental GTC conversion into a shooting brake format (2 door station wagon) by a coachbuilding company called Carrozzeria Touring based in Milan, (company now rebranded into “Touring Superleggera”) and here’s some pics of the real thing shown at the 2010 Geneva motorshow.

Bentley Arnage Wagon

This is a one off special Bentley Arnage Station Wagon, made for a private customer by the VGD Genaddi Design group in 2003. One of the strongest features of the car was the carry over of the walnut detailing into the rear of the car with a slide out loading shelf in the style of a classic boat deck.
